Interested in joining Tallaght Wheelers? Here’s everything you need to know.
To become a member, everyone is asked to complete a short new member course. This consists of three sessions held in a safe, controlled environment. The best part? The course is completely free, and all participants are covered under the club’s insurance. You’ll also receive a handy club handbook to get you started.
So, why is the course important? It serves two key purposes. Firstly, it introduces the fundamentals of group cycling and proper cycling etiquette. Secondly, it allows the club to assess your ability and place you in the group that best matches your level, ensuring an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone.
If you’re already an experienced cyclist or a member of another club and can demonstrate this, you won’t be required to complete the full course—however, attendance on the first day is still necessary.
What you’ll need to take part:
- Bike: A roadworthy bike is essential. While a road bike with dropped handlebars is preferred, it’s not mandatory. A flat-handlebar bike is perfectly fine to get started, though many riders choose to upgrade later.
- Clothing: There’s no need for specialised cycling gear at the beginning—just wear something comfortable. The same applies to footwear. A helmet, however, is mandatory. As you get more into cycling, you can consider upgrading your kit.
- Experience: Cyclists of all levels are welcome. There are no minimum requirements for distance or average speed.
Once you’ve completed the course, you can decide whether you’d like to join the club—there’s absolutely no obligation. If you do choose to join, you’ll need at least a Cycling Ireland Leisure Membership, along with the club membership fee.
The next new members’ course begins on May 9th, 2026.
