From Strength to Strength: Women at the Heart of Our Club
Since its founding in 2018, Tallaght Wheelers has thrived thanks to the dedication and leadership of its members—women and men alike. Women have played an integral role in the club’s growth, holding key positions and contributing across all aspects of its development. Female membership has also continued to increase steadily each year.
The club has long supported equal participation in cycling through inclusive initiatives and community events. Highlights include celebrating International Women’s Day, collaborating with local clubs on women’s rides, and engaging with national cycling programmes that promote diversity in sport.
Under the guidance of Sinead McSorley (Women in Sport Lead), Emma Billane (Club Secretary), and Danuta Tomiczek (Ride Leader Captain), the club has strengthened its commitment to supporting current and future women riders. This focus has delivered clear results: women now represent more than one-third of the overall membership.
Recent years have seen significant progress toward making the club a more connected, supportive space for every rider. Three members recently completed Cycling Ireland’s Women in Sport Mentoring Skills Programme, and the club hosted its first female-led Summer Solstice Cycle, raising over €4,000 for Women’s Aid.
That momentum continues into this year. Tallaght Wheelers has joined forces with nearby clubs for social events marking Little Christmas (6 January) and International Women’s Day (8 March), and members will soon take part in Cycling Ireland’s new Women’s Sportive Series.
To further encourage participation, the club now offers monthly women’s group spins on the last Sunday of each month—complementing regular mixed rides. Later this year, a female-led new members’ course will launch, offering a supportive space for cyclists new to the sport.
